Our guest speaker, Frank Engel, Member of the European Parliament, will speak on the subject: "All the Good Things Britain Could Do For Europe - A Christmas Selection."

As 2014 draws to a close, who would not believe that the past year has been pivotal in shaping British stances towards the European Union? In September, the UK itself avoided becoming disunited, but as UKIP's national fortunes rise, the British political establishment feels increasingly cornered. Among other signs, the refusal of David Cameron to support Jean-Claude Juncker's bid for the presidency of the Commission was a clear indication that Britain wants to explore uncharted waters in Europe. As a country which once ruled the waves, this seems the logical thing to do. At the upcoming Christmas Lunch, a modest contribution towards mapping alternative courses in and for Europe will be explored.

Frank Engel, MEP, studied law at the universities of Brussels and Metz. He was political assistant to Jacques Santer, former President of the European Commission, in 1999. In 2001, he was appointed as secretary general of the parliamentary group of CSV, a position he held until his first election to the European Parliament in 2009. Re-elected in 2014, he sits on the Committees for Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs and Economic and Monetary Affairs.
