The HR sub-group is keen to bring you events that are relevant to all members and in particular small businesses and independents that do not have the benefit of a dedicated HR team. At last year’s People Café, we asked the question ‘What are your people issues?’ From your answers we compiled a list of hot topics and are introducing them as a series of discussions over afternoon tea.

The first event is on the subject of MOTIVATION AND ENGAGEMENT. Years ago the ‘carrot and stick’ style of management was successful as most jobs were routine tasks, with little thought required. Then in 1949, Harlow published results from behavioural experiments which indicated that external motivators (carrots) had a negative effect on performance of tasks which required thought. The idea did not gain ground and he gave up his research but today the idea is more accepted. This is important as more of the new jobs today are in the creative rather than routine fields (Europe 74%/26% - USA 70%/30%) and managers need to learn new styles.

So what motivates you? What motivates the people around you? Your team? How do you keep people engaged so that you retain talent rather than only the people who find it hard to move on…..?  Oh….and why APE? Come and find out!  The format will be highly interactive with table discussions on different questions with facilitators. Pre-work - You will receive 2 TED talk links on registration.

The event is generously sponsored by BIL Luxembourg.
